Hello Everyone,
Once again, spring is upon us and exciting things are happening at our clinics. We are now offering acupuncture at the Burnsville and Highland Clinics. Many existing patients have inquired about acupuncture, so I thought I would take this opportunity to answer a few of the most commonly asked questions.
1. What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a 2,500 year-old Chinese medical treatment which involves inserting thin needles under the skin to stimulate specific points that allow the free flow of "chi" (chee) or body energy. Theoretically, a blocking or imbalance of the flow of chi at any point on a pathway may result in illness. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe acupuncture unblocks and balances the flow of chi to restore health.
2. How many needles are used, and how many treatments are needed?
One to twenty needles are typically used. The number of treatments depends on the problem being treated and on the patient's response. Five to fifteen treatments are usually enough. Some cases respond dramatically after 1-3 treatments.
3.Does it hurt?
Generally, there is minimal sensation. This is due to the extreme fineness of the needle, the sharpness of its point, and the dexterity of the practitioner in inserting it swiftly through the skin. Once the needle is in place, a sensation of a dull ache, a light electric current along the treated limb, to a nice heat may be felt.
4. What risks are involved?
Performed properly, acupuncture in one of the safest forms of therapy. Fainting is a complication that occurs in one or two out of every 100 patients; this can happen because of fear of needles or oversensitivity to the number of needles, but usually it's because the patient didn't eat anything before the treatment. Of course, anytime a needle enters the skin there is a slight risk of infection. To eliminate this risk, we use sterile disposable needles and take all proper precautions.
5. What conditions can be treated?
Acupuncture is used to relieve pain and treat certain health conditions. It may be used alone or as part of a treatment program. Acupuncture works well for many problems, including headaches, neck pain, low back pain, musculoskelatal injuries, and arthritis.
I hope this information has been interesting and beneficial. Feel free to drop by one of our clinics with any further questions you may have or you can

Yours for better health,
Kurt Brausen, D.C.
