Benefits of Massage and Chiropractic
- Massage and chiropractic treatments are highly complementary and can mutually enhance the healthcare benefits of both types of treatment
- Massage helps to stabilize the spine and increase the benefits of Chiropractic adjustments
- Massage creates greater blood circulation and the release of tension, thus increasing the benefits of Chiropractic adjustments
- Tight muscles can pull the spine out of alignment, and massage relaxes and releases muscle tension
- Chiropractic assessment of spinal problems can identify more serious conditions
About Chiropractic
The focus of traditional health care is on germs and blood. Chiropractic is different. Chiropractic produces results by helping your nervous system work the way it should.
It's a scientific fact that your brain, spinal cord and the rest of your nerves control every aspect of you body. Hinder the vital nerve links between you brain and your body, and ill health can result. A common source of interference comes from the moving bones that encase the "information super highway" of your spinal cord.
These subluxations can produce a variety of health problems.
Nerve pressure can cause numbness, weakness or the under-performance of organs and tissues. Or, spinal misalignment can cause nerve tissue to stretch, chafe or become irritated. This can distort nerve messages between you body and your brain. The result? Hyperactive organ function, high blood pressure or even pain.
The medical approach puts chemicals into your bloodstream to artificially change the way your body works. Laxatives to speed up elimination. Antacids to reduce stomach acid. Besides the fatal mistakes, side effects and possible kidney damage, drugs often ignore the real cause of the problem.
Instead, the focus of chiropractic care is on the integrity of your nervous system.
A thorough examination helps locate areas of nervous system compromise. The moving bones of the spine are common culprits. Then, specific chiropractic adjustments help reduce these interferences. The intent is to restore your body's ability to regulate and heal itself. Without drugs. Without surgery.
Chiropractic is simple. It's natural. It honors the wisdom of your body. And it has helped millions enjoy relief and better health for more than a century.
How Does Chiropractic Work?
Spinal joints that are "locked up," fixated or not moving right can affect your health by "choking" or irritating nearby nerve tissue. Chiropractic adjustments add motion to these stuck areas. This helps restore nervous system integrity and can improve the healing process.
There are many ways to adjust the spine. Sometimes the doctor's hands deliver a quick, highly accurate thrust. Or an instrument directs a repeatable force to a fixated spinal joint. Other times a slow, constant pressure is used. Some chiropractic doctors use special tables with moving sections. Several areas of the spine may by adjusted or just one.
The key is to use the precise amount of energy. At the exact spot. In the right direction. At just the right time, to get spinal joints moving again. Chiropractic is truly an art. Your chiropractic doctor has become a master at one or more adjusting techniques.
Just about anyone can get adjusted. Newborns, infants, children, seniors, and even failed back surgery patients can benefit. Naturally, you doctor tailors your chiropractic care to your size, age and unique health problem.
With the intent of reducing nervous system irritation, chiropractic adjustments are specific. Targeted. Focused. And more precise than spinal "manipulations" or "mobilization." It is this precision, combined with the purpose of reducing nervous system irritation, which has helped so many people before.
Health Benefits
Another difference between chiropractic and traditional healthcare is that doctors of chiropractic do not treat symptoms.
For example: in traditional healthcare, you may be instructed to take aspirin for a headache to relieve the pain. Sure the headache won't hurt for a few hours, but what about the cause of the headache? It's still there! The pain of the headache is the symptom. A symptom (pain in this case) is the body's way of telling you there is something wrong. So why would you take medication to get rid of the symptom without getting rid of the cause? It's like pulling the batteries out of the smoke detector, but not putting out the fire!
Chiropractic is different. The chiropractic doctor will take note of the symptoms you are having, and use that as a guide to the area of your body where the structural cause of the problem exists. By doing a thorough history and examination, the chiropractor can also locate areas where a problem exists before it causes symptoms!
You can begin to imagine the possible benefits of chiropractic care. Not only is chiropractic a proven way to get rid of a number of structurally caused symptoms (back pain, neck pain, headaches, arm or leg numbness/pain, and a host of others), it is an excellent way to prevent these problems from happening and to maintain an optimum level of health.
Chiropractic Doctor's Education
The education of a doctor of chiropractic is long and rigorous. The schooling begins with four years of undergraduate work, usually in the area of biology. Chiropractic College will then take another 4 years of study, with only one month off per year. The first two years are intensive in the science courses (Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology, Biochemistry, Neurology, etc) with some beginning clinical courses. The last two years are predominated by the clinical courses (Chiropractic methods, Physical Diagnosis, Radiology, Nutrition, etc.). Two terms of internship and one term of externship complete the education.
Doctors of chiropractic must also complete 4 rounds of National Board Exams and a State Exam before becoming licensed doctors. But the education does not stop there. Every year, chiropractors must attend numerous hours of continuing education in the chiropractic field, radiology, and professional boundaries to maintain their licenses.
