SCIENCE COURSES

SC101 Anatomy and Physiology I
This course gives a basic knowledge of the organization of the human body, body chemistry, and cell and tissue types as the foundation for further study in Anatomy and Physiology II, III and IV.

Prerequisite: None. Hours: 26


SC103 Kinesiology & Clay Lab
An in depth study of the body's muscles. This course emphasizes the origin, insertion, and action of the skeletal muscles. Nerve innervations of major muscle groups are also discussed. To further enhance student understanding of the body's musculature origins, insertions, actions, and fiber directions students use a specially made skeletal model to form and layer skeletal muscles.

Prerequisites: Anatomy and Physiology II, Medical Terminology and Documentation. Hours: 44


SC104 Medical Terminology & Documentation
This course is designed to broaden the communication capabilities and promote the professional standing of the Massage Therapist in the healthcare community. Special attention will be given to proper documentation through the use of SOAP charting.

Prerequisites: None. Hours: 15


SC105 Standard Precautions
Designed to protect both the massage therapist and client from communicable disease using standard precautions.

Prerequisites: None. Hours: 2


SC201 Anatomy and Physiology II
This course covers in detail the integumentary, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems.

Prerequisites: None. Hours: 29


SC202 Pathology and Infectious Diseases
This course is an in depth study of Pathology and Infectious diseases specific to the body-worker. Focus is on abnormal conditions, diseases, and disorders that include indications and contraindications to massage, movement, and hydrotherapy.

Prerequisites: A and P II, A and P III, A and P IV and Medical Terminology and Documentation. Hours: 35


SC205 Anatomy and Physiology III This course focuses on the following systems: endocrine, blood/circulatory and lymphatic.

Prerequisites: None. Hours: 23


SC206 Anatomy and Physiology IV This course focuses on the following systems: special senses, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive.

Prerequisites: None. Hours: 23


SC300 Neurology This course will focus in depth on the nervous system. Special attention will be given to the autonomic nervous system and the peripheral nervous system as it relates to muscle innervation.

Prerequisites: Kinesiology and Clay Lab. Hours: 20


MASSAGE TECHNIQUE COURSES

MT101 Reflexology I
This course is designed to lay down the foundation for bodywork in massage. Students will learn five (5) fundamental massage strokes, basic for massage: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement and vibration. Students will also focus on massage flow, timing and body mechanics. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 45 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisites: None. Hours: 50


MT101 Reflexology I
Introduces students to Reflexology, a modality based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet, which correspond to distinct body parts. Students will learn a variety of techniques with which to bring about stress reduction and a physiological change in the body. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 18 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisites: None. Hours: 23


MT102 Intermediate Massage
Students will enhance their massage education and practice with advanced Swedish massage techniques to achieve a greater level of skill required for professional massage. Students will develop skills that will qualify them to begin their full body massage practicum requirements. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 36 hours and 15 hours respectively.

Prerequisite: Swedish Massage, and Medical Terminology and Documentation Hours: 51


MT103 Chair Massage
Students will be trained in chair massage, whereby they will learn specific techniques for the head, neck, back, and shoulders using a professionally designed chair or a standard chair. This type of massage can be performed in as few as 5 minutes but usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 18 hours and 16 hours respectively.

Prerequisites: Swedish Massage. Hours: 34


MT104 Massage and the Abused
Focus is on the client and possible abuse history, whether the abuse is psychological/emotional, verbal, physical or sexual. Some attention will be given to clients that may have encountered traumatic events, not necessarily related to abuse. Students will learn techniques that will assist in handling emotions that may surface during massage therapy.

Prerequisite: Intermediate Massage and Ethics. Hours: 8


MT105 Self-Care
Students will learn how to manage their personal health through massage, healthy living, and behavior management in order to maintain a successful massage practice.

Prerequisites: None. Hours: 4


MT 106 Practicum Prep
Students will become familiar with the objectives of the practicum portion of the program.

Prerequisites: Ethics, Universal Precautions, Chair Massage and/or Intermediate Massage or Reflexology II Hours: 4


MT201 Geriatrics and Massage
Focuses on the changes that occur with the aging process and massage techniques that may need to be modified to adjust for these changes.

Prerequisite: Anatomy and Physiology II and III, Intermediate Massage and Ethics. Hours: 18


MT 203 Reflexology II
This course reviews the reflexology theory and development. This hands-on course will familiarize students with reflexology techniques specific for hands. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 18 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisite: Reflexology I and Medical Terminology and Documentation. Hours: 23


MT204 Massage and Pregnancy
This course focuses on the accommodations that are needed for a pregnant woman during the stages of and after pregnancy. Special attention will be give to precautions and contraindications for massage and reflexology during pregnancy and post-partum.

Prerequisite: Anatomy & Physiology II, III and IV, Medical Terminology and Documentation, Intermediate Massage and Ethics. Hours: 18


MT206 Chair Massage II
This course is designed to expand upon On-Site Chair Massage I. Students will learn more treatment specific techniques as well as gain experience with the versatility of massage chairs. Special attention will be given to body mechanics as students learn to access different areas of the body. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 36 hours and 4 hours respectively.

Prerequisite: Chair Massage and Kinesiology and Clay Lab. Hours: 40


MT301 Sports Massage
Sports Massage incorporates skills to be used specifically with athletes and individuals with sports injuries. Pre- and post-game methodologies will be explained. Identifying when, where and how sports massage techniques can be applied will also be addressed. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 48 hours and 5 hours respectively.


Prerequisite: Anatomy and Physiology II and III, Intermediate Massage and Structural Analysis. Hours: 53


MT302 Reflexology III
This course correlates reflexology maps to human anatomy and details reflexology's physiological effects. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 27 hours and 5 hours respectively.


Prerequisite: Reflexology I, Anatomy and Physiology II, III and IV. Hours: 32


MT303 Acupressure I
This is an introduction to Acupressure. This course will discuss the eastern medical philosophy. Students will become familiar with the terminology used for this modality. Students will also understand how the medical theory is applied to the meridians of the body and start to be able to locate the 12 great points in acupressure. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 30 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisite: Swedish Massage. Hours: 35


MT304 Muscular Therapy: Deep Tissue Massage & Trigger Point Therapy I
Students will learn the basis for trigger point and deep tissue massage, learning theory of trigger pints, that causes and distinction between active and latent. Students will develop deep tissue palpation skills and learn to distinguish between ischemic muscle tissue and trigger points within ischemic muscle tissue. Specific treatments and treatment protocol will be taught for the torso of the body. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 42 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisites: Kinesiology and Clay Lab and Intermediate Massage Hours: 47


MT305 Integrated Massage Techniques: Reflexology
This course is designed to integrate the techniques and modalities of Reflexology into Swedish Massage. Emphasis will be on technique, flow, refining mechanics, documentation, and communication between massage therapist and client.

Prerequisite: Intermediate Massage and Reflexology I. Hours: 4


MT306 Myofascial Release
Students will learn to understand the Myofascial system and how it affects the body. Specific manipulation and stretching techniques will be taught to affect the Myofascial tissue. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 24 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisites: Intermediate Massage and Anatomy and Physiology II. Hours: 29


MT307 Muscular Therapy: Deep Tissue Massage & Trigger Point Therapy II
Building on the concepts of Muscular Therapy I, this course will teach specific treatments and treatment protocol for the musculature of the hip and lower extremities. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 33 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisites: Muscular Therapy I and Structural Analysis. Hours: 38


MT308 Muscular Therapy: Deep Tissue Massage & Trigger Point Therapy III
Building on the concepts of Muscular Therapy I, this course will teach specific treatments and treatment protocol for the shoulder girdle and upper extremities. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 36 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisite: Muscular Therapy I and Structural Analysis. Hours: 41


MT309 Structural Analysis
This course will give students the basic ability to visually and kinesthetically evaluate client posture and areas of restriction. Female students will need shorts and a sports bra; male students will need shorts for class.

Prerequisites: Medical Terminology and Documentation and Kinesiology and Clay Lab. Hours: 14


MT401 Integrated Massage Techniques: Sports
This course is designed to integrate the technique from the sports modality of massage into a Swedish massage. Emphasis will be on incorporating deeper work and stretching into a Swedish massage, flow, refining mechanics, documentation, and communication between the massage therapist and client. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 4 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisite: Sports Massage. Hours: 9


MT402 Integrated Massage Techniques: Myofascial Release
This course is designed to integrate the techniques in Myofascial work into a Swedish massage, flow, refining mechanics, documentation, and communication between massage therapist and client. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 4 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisite: Myofascial Release. Hours: 9


MT403 Integrated Massage: Muscular Therapy
This course is designed to integrate the technique in MT304, MT307, MT 308. Emphasis will be on incorporating Deep Tissue work into a Swedish massage, flow, refining mechanics, documentation, and communication between massage therapist and client. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 4 hours and 5 hours respectively.


Prerequisite: Muscular Therapy II or III. Hours: 9


MT404 Reflexology IV
This course is designed to deepen the student's practical skills. Included in the course is instruction on ethics, documentation, anatomy and the history and science of Reflexology as well as toot pathology.

Prerequisite: Reflexology III. Hours: 35


MT405 Myofascial II
This course builds on the techniques and skills learned in MT306. Students will learn to access deeper layers of fascia and be introduced to unwinding techniques. This course has both a classroom and practicum component: 21 hours and 5 hours respectively.

Prerequisite: Myofascial Release and Structural Analysis. Hours: 26



ACADEMIC COURSES

AC102 Ethical Issues
This course examines the interpersonal nature of the therapeutic relationship and helps the student develop effective communication skills that they can apply to their interaction with all clients. The course also, explores possible situations that may occur in the massage profession.

Prerequisite: Spirituality I. Hours: 9


AC103 Spirituality I
The students will explore and understand their spiritual beliefs and those of prospective clients.

Prerequisite: None. Hours: 4


AC201 Business Practices and Communications
This course focuses on the basic principles of establishing a solo or group practice, writing a business and marketing plan (including a cost-profit analysis), establishing a fee for services, and acquiring business insurance. Some tax concerns will also be addressed.

Prerequisite: None. Hours: 30


AC203 and AC205 Adult CPR & Basic First Aid
These courses are required and the hours are included in the program hour totals. CPR certification is valid for one year; therefore this course is to be completed near the end of the program.

Prerequisite: None. Hours: 8


AC204 Spirituality II
Students will explore and evaluate their own spiritual beliefs and experience how these beliefs have an impact on clients and others in a therapeutic setting. This course focuses on the spiritual aspect of prayer.

Prerequisite: Ethics and Intermediate Massage. Hours: 4


AC206 Spirituality III
Students will be presented the basic differences of New Age and Christianity. Using a Christian foundation, students will look at superficial similarities of New Age beliefs and see the deeper and more significant differences. With an increased awareness and understanding students will discuss how working with clients of different beliefs can impact the therapist, the client and the therapist/client relationship and the role discernment has.

Prerequisite: Spirituality II. Hours: 4
